Political Cartooning // Art as a Tool for Public Debate
Project type
Workshops & Exhibition
Date
2018
Location
Ghana
Role
Lead-planning, coordinator, and curator.
Political cartooning has a long history as one of the most democratic of art forms — sharp, immediate, and made for public space. This workshop series brought that tradition into the hands of 125 young artists in Ghana, giving them both the skills and the conceptual framework to use their art as a tool for social commentary and civic engagement.
Facilitated by Ghanaian artist Bright Ackwerh, the workshops explored how visual satire and narrative can challenge power, spark conversation, and shift public opinion. Selected works were exhibited and presented publicly during the national Independence Day celebrations in Tamale — placing young artists and their political voices at the centre of one of Ghana's most significant civic moments.
