Gejst Festival

Project type

Festival presence

Date

2023 & 2024

Location

Horsens, Denmark

Role

Responsible for concept development, partnership coordination, and curatorial planning of both festival participations.

Gejst is a youth festival — which made it a natural site for work rooted in youth voice, participation, and the belief that art-making is accessible to everyone. Ghana Venskab's presence at Gejst in both 2023 and 2024 translated the participatory ethos of The Art of Change directly into a Danish festival context, inviting young people to create alongside professional artists rather than simply observe.

In 2024, the focus was on youth voice and collective expression. Under the title Youth Speak Up!, visitors were invited to co-create a large-scale paste-up artwork exploring what it means to be young and to be heard. The result was a shared artwork built from many individual contributions, reflecting the participatory curatorial logic that runs through the wider project.

In 2023, the workshop was themed: Expressing Sustainability. In collaboration with artists Sandro Masai and Phuc Van Dang, participants worked with reclaimed plastic materials to collectively build a large artwork evoking waterfalls and sea creatures — making environmental questions tangible and beautiful rather than abstract and distant. The workshop extended the conceptual thread of the Expressing Sustainability programme developed with the Tamale artist network into a Danish public setting.

Across both years, the festival participation functioned as a point of connection between Ghana Venskab's international work and Danish audiences.
