How do we talk about climate change when the scale of the crisis exceeds our imagination? Expressing Sustainability approached this question through art — specifically through conceptual art as a method for transforming the abstract and overwhelming into something visible, material, and felt.
In August 2024, 20 young artists from the Tamale artist network were selected through an open call to participate in a five-day conceptual art workshop at Red Clay Studio and Nuku Studio in Tamale, held in connection with the Climate Pre-COP. Facilitated by Afro-Brazilian artist Sandro Masai and Ghanaian satirical artist Bright Ackwerh, the workshop guided participants through a co-creative process — from brainstorming and concept development to production, documentation, and public presentation.
The collective outcome was The Veil — a large-scale conceptual installation made from repurposed imported secondhand clothing. Drawing on the cultural and symbolic significance of the veil in Northern Ghanaian tradition, the work reimagines it on a global scale as a commentary on humanity's tendency to mask rather than confront environmental degradation. The very materials that contribute to pollution become the veil that obscures it.
The Veil was exhibited at Nuku Studio in Tamale and subsequently at Kunsthal Nord in Aalborg, Denmark — completing the south–north journey that runs through the whole of The Art of Change.
